This process also expanded the delta into the sea each year, and the earth that was carried westwards by the waves of the Mediterranean to add to the land connecting Alexandria and Pharos was also part of this cycle. Along the way, the silt deposited in the riverbanks and in the delta itself created some of the world’s most fertile soil. Before the Nile was dammed in the 19th and 20th centuries, its annual flood dragged silt from the length of the river to the delta. On each side of this peninsula are the two bays of Alexandria. Over time, the Mediterranean has added to the original earthworks to such an extent that Pharos has become the head of a peninsula rather than an island. In the 3rd century BCE, a road was built to the island. The site of the city was, when Alexander the Great founded it in the 4th century BCE, one large bay with an island at its centre, called Pharos.
The other striking thing about the form of Alexandria is its two bays. The fact that the city now straggles along the coast rather than sprawling inland is partly a result of this plan. In his vision for Alexandria, McLean plotted its expansion to east and west, convinced that any land reclaimed from Lake Mariout would be needed for farming rather than housing. It was prepared by William H McLean, a Scot who had an urban planning career across the colonial Middle East: he was town engineer in Khartoum, and also prepared a masterplan for Jerusalem. In 1921, during the period of British rule, a new masterplan was put in place for the city. To the south is Lake Mariout, which once hemmed in the city rather closely, but has been reduced over the past century as land has been reclaimed for agriculture and for Alexandria International Airport. Squeeze through the hollow log again and reunite with Wake.The ancient city of Alexandria lies on a narrow strip of Mediterranean coast to the west of the Nile delta. Squeeze through the hollow log and when the Goosebump Casket reaches your Barblings, have the 10 Barblings carry the Goosebump Casket instead. Switch back to Kirby and collect, then toss, the 10 Shiverling Clones at the Goosebump Casket to carry it. As Wake, toss Shiverlings into the Duplication Tree 10 times to create 10 Shiverling Clones. Use the lantern on the Warden Statue and switch to Wake while using it. Have Kirby pull the Barblings off the barrel and use them to break the crystals around the northern hollow log. Head to the windmill to higher the barrel then switch to Kirby. Switch back to Wake and use the Shiverlings on the freezing, crumbling wall above. Toss 10 of the Barblings on the netted barrel and squeeze through the hollow log. As Wake, vacuum the windmill and switch to Kirby while he’s using the Gustbuster. Use your Barblings to destroy the crystal blocking the hollow log. (If you have not done so, get rid of any enemies you come across to ensure your Spritelings will deliver the relic interruption-free). Warp to the Frostfields and head east, walking past the shrine, continuing past the Frosty Faefly Hive, to some crystals.
